John J. Rivero was born in Ecuador, South America. At age 5, his family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Jersey City, New Jersey. He is a graduate of the Jersey City Public Schools and graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He holds two Master’s Degrees, one in Urban Education, the other in Instructional Leadership from New Jersey City University. In 1995 he became a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher serving English Language Learners at the Dr. Michael Conti School, PS #5 in Jersey City. After teaching for seven years he was selected to be his school’s Whole School Reform Model Facilitator. Shortly thereafter, he was named Assistant Principal, a position that he held for seven years. In June 2013, Mr. Rivero was named Principal of the Dr. Michael Conti School, PS #5.
Immensely thankful for the opportunities he has been granted, first as a teacher and then as a school administrator, to serve our youth and their families, Mr. Rivero derives an enormous sense of accomplishment and joy from his career as an educator. Bringing Nimbus Dance Works to the Dr. Michael Conti School community and encouraging student creativity, is a result of Mr. Rivero’s firm belief that while academic achievement is fundamental, successful schools must also promote a love & appreciation for the arts. Mr. Rivero’s own favorite pastimes outside work, include reading historical fiction, and spending time with family & friends either traveling, going out to dinner, to the movies or Broadway shows.
