Anisa joined Arts Ed NJ’s Youth Arts Education Council as part of its second cohort, and since then, she’s turned a freshman year at Brookdale Community College into the start of a creative career in game design and animation. Along the way, Anisa has built skills in 3D modeling, coding, and video editing, all while learning to advocate for herself and seek out opportunities rather than wait for them. We caught up with Anisa to hear how her time with the council shaped her growth, what’s stuck with her since, and where she’s headed next.
What have you been up to since participating in the Youth Arts Education Council?
Since participating in the Youth Arts Education Council, I completed my freshman year at Brookdale Community College, where I discovered a passion for game design and animation. Throughout the year, I developed skills in 3D modeling, coding, and video editing while exploring different creative fields. As the school year came to an end, I realized I hadn’t taken advantage of many scholarships or arts opportunities that could help me grow professionally. That realization motivated me to start advocating for myself and actively seeking new experiences. Using the confidence I gained through Arts Ed NJ, I applied for two opportunities including one outside my age range, where I was able to assist with and observe the program. Those experiences reinforced the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone and taking initiative when opportunities arise.
How did the program impact you personally or professionally?
The program had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional growth. It broadened my perspective on arts education by exposing me to artists from many different disciplines, including music, dance, and theater. Hearing their experiences helped me realize that, although every art form is different, they are all connected through passion and creativity. Professionally, the program strengthened my ability to collaborate, listen to diverse perspectives, and ensure everyone’s voice is valued. Those teamwork and leadership skills continue to help me in both school and creative projects.
What skills or techniques have stayed with you?
The biggest skills that have stayed with me are collaboration, communication, and self-advocacy. Arts Ed NJ taught me the importance of listening to others, working as part of a team, and confidently sharing my own ideas. I’ve also learned that growth comes from taking initiative and seeking opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to you.
Did the experience help you step outside your comfort zone?
Absolutely. One of the biggest lessons I took away from the program was that stepping outside my comfort zone often leads to the greatest growth. Because of that mindset, I became more willing to apply for opportunities, introduce myself to professionals, and participate in
experiences I might have otherwise talked myself out of. Each challenge helped me grow not only as a leader but also as a person.
What advice would you give future participants?
Stay connected with Arts Ed NJ even after your time on the council ends. Whether it’s through the newsletter or alumni opportunities, it’s an incredible community that continues to support young artists. Also, don’t be intimidated by people you think are “above” you. They’re people just like you, and they were once in your position. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, or reach out. The worst someone can say is no or they may simply not respond, but you’ll never know unless you ask.
What’s next for you?
I’m excited to continue developing my skills in game design, animation, and digital art while pursuing new creative and professional opportunities. I’m looking forward to expanding my portfolio, connecting with more artists and mentors, and continuing to grow both creatively and professionally.
With your chosen art form, where do you see these skills playing a role in your future?
As someone pursuing game design and animation, I know the skills I developed through Arts Ed NJ will continue to play an important role in my future. Creating games and animations is highly collaborative, so communication, teamwork, and leadership are essential. The confidence to advocate for myself and step outside my comfort zone has also encouraged me to pursue internships, scholarships, and networking opportunities that will help me build a career in the arts.
