Rebecca Slater is currently a senior at Newark Academy. Her favorite subjects in school are math and physics. She is the co-president of Math Club and a member of her school’s robotics team. Rebecca began her musical endeavors with the piano at five years old, but switched to the violin at age seven. Currently, she studies with Khullip Jeung, who has taught her for almost eight years. She has been a part of the New Jersey Youth Symphony for a decade and currently plays in the organization’s official string quartet. Over the summer, she volunteered as an assistant violin coach and counselor at the NJYS Summer Program. She also coaches sixth grade violinists at her school once a week. Since the sixth grade, Rebecca has participated in the New Jersey Regional and All State orchestras, scoring in the top three every year. Last year, she served as concertmaster of the All-Eastern Orchestra, which is comprised of junior and senior instrumentalists from eleven states in the north-eastern region of the US. Next year, Rebecca plans on pursuing mechanical engineering at MIT.
